You get in the car after a meeting, plug your iPhone into the charger, and nothing happens.
Not slow charging, not intermittent charging, just a phone that sits there at whatever percentage it was at, sometimes with a message that reads "Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down."
Most people assume this means something is broken. Almost every time we check a phone brought in for exactly this complaint, it isn't.
Apple publishes an actual number for this, and it explains almost everything.
According to Apple's own support documentation, iPhone is designed to operate in ambient temperatures between 0° and 35°C (32° to 95°F), and using or charging the device above that range "can permanently reduce battery lifespan."
When the phone gets hotter than that, its software doesn't malfunction, it does exactly what it was built to do: it slows charging, sometimes caps it at 80 percent, and in more extreme cases pauses it entirely with that "Charging On Hold" message, resuming automatically once the device cools back down.
Here's what makes that number matter so much where you live. Dubai's average high temperature in July sits around 40°C, and even in the "cooler" shoulder months of the summer it regularly climbs past Apple's 35°C ceiling for weeks at a stretch.
Your iPhone isn't reacting to a freak heatwave a few days a year. For a meaningful chunk of the year, ambient air alone is enough to put it right at the edge of its rated operating range, before you've even factored in direct sunlight or a parked car.
Why a Parked Car Makes This So Much Worse
Ambient air temperature and the actual temperature your phone experiences are two very different numbers.
Independent studies on car interiors have found that dashboards and surfaces near direct sunlight can climb tens of degrees above the outside air temperature within minutes, easily pushing well past 60°C in a closed, parked car even when the temperature outside is nowhere near that extreme.
A phone sitting on a dashboard or in a cupholder in direct sun isn't experiencing "a hot day." It's sitting in a small, sealed greenhouse.
This is why so many charging complaints trace back to a specific pattern: the phone charged fine at home or in the office, then stopped the moment someone tried to charge it in the car during the drive.
It's not a coincidence, and it's not the car charger's fault either. It's the same 35°C rule, just reached faster.

Charging Itself Generates Heat, Which Makes a Hot Day Worse
There's a detail in Apple's guidance that most people miss entirely: charging a battery produces heat as a normal byproduct of the process, which is exactly why the software throttles or caps charging above 80 percent once the battery gets warm.
That means if your phone is already sitting near the upper edge of its safe range just from the weather, plugging it in to charge can be the thing that tips it over, even though charging is supposed to help, not hurt.
That's also why fast chargers sometimes make the problem more visible rather than less.
A higher-wattage charger delivers more power in less time, which generates more heat faster, which trips the same thermal protection sooner on a phone that was already running warm from the environment around it.
The Quick Way to Tell If Heat Is Actually the Cause
Before assuming anything is wrong with the phone itself, there's a simple way to check. Move the phone into an air-conditioned space, out of direct sunlight, and let it sit unplugged for about fifteen minutes.
If it feels noticeably cool to the touch and you plug it in and it starts charging normally, that confirms the phone was doing exactly what it's designed to do.
No repair needed, just a reminder that direct sun and parked cars are harder on a phone here than almost anywhere else in the world.
If it still won't charge after cooling down completely, that rules heat out, and something else is going on.
The Other Two Things That Mimic This Exact Symptom
Heat explains a large share of charging complaints during Dubai's hotter months, but two other things produce a nearly identical symptom and are worth ruling out at the same time.
Fine dust and sand, especially after strong wind events, work their way into a charging port more easily than most people expect, and combined with the humidity swings between air-conditioned indoor spaces and the outside air, that dust can pack into the port just enough to cause the same intermittent, angle-dependent charging that heat causes.
A flashlight check of the port, done with the phone powered off, usually shows this immediately.
The second is the charging cable itself. A cable without genuine Apple MFi certification, common among the very cheap ones sold at electronics kiosks, can lack the chip that tells an iPhone how much power it's safe to draw, and iOS will sometimes throttle or refuse charging as a protective response.
If a phone charges fine with a friend's cable but not your own, the weather was never the issue.

When It's Genuinely a Hardware Problem
A small number of cases are neither heat, dust, nor a bad cable. If the phone feels hot to the touch even after sitting untouched, unplugged, in a cool room for twenty minutes, or if you notice any swelling along the screen edges or a back panel that's lifted slightly at the corners, that points to the battery itself rather than the environment.
A charging port with a visibly bent pin, or a phone that was splashed or dropped in water in the past few weeks even if it seemed fine at the time, also falls into this category. None of these should be tested further at home.
What a Real Diagnostic Actually Checks
A proper diagnostic doesn't start by guessing based on the symptom you describe. It means checking the port under magnification for damage or debris, measuring the battery's actual voltage rather than reading the software's estimated percentage, and testing the charging circuitry on the logic board itself, which regulates incoming power and is a more common failure point than most people assume.
That's the only reliable way to tell a heat-related pause, a dust-clogged port, a failing cable, and an actual hardware fault apart, since all four can look identical from the outside.
